Pre-Purchase (Marine) Survey:

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection.

Optional services for Pre-purchase Surveys or Damage Surveys are listed under "Marine Engineering Services".

Condition & Valuation (Insurance) Survey:

A C&V Survey reports on the current condition of a vessel and its current value as judged by area and condition. This can be the most common form of survey for pleasure boats, and is a very valuable item when buying or selling a vessel. A C&V Survey is similar to a Pre-purchase survey, but is a visual survey. This survey is common for vessels when they are dry-docked, when systems are winterized or not operational for testing, and a visual inspection is all that can be obtained.

This is the most common form of survey for pleasure vessels that need a survey for their insurance company.  Most underwriters will request a C&V Survey before they sign a vessel under their company.

*A Surveyor can never give an accurate value without a survey.

Damage Survey or Marine Inspection

This is performed to assess the extent of damage of a vessel.  This can sometimes include determining the recommend repairs, estimate repair cost, or possible cause.  A Damage Survey is most often requested by an insurance company.  The Damage Surveyor and Insurance Adjustor are two different roles and should not be confused.  The Survey can be hired by the Owner, Insurance Agent, Insurance Company, or the Financial Institution.  It is common that each party involved could hire their own surveyor to represent their own interests.
